Unit 2 LO 1.1

Week 7: Unit 2: Research Editing

Introduction:

I will be researching different types of software for editing.

What I am going to research:

Primary

  • Look at the software they have on the college computers

Secondary

  • Different software available
  • What editors used before they had computer software

Report:

There is lots of different software available. Some are completely free, some you buy once and can use for ever and some work with a subscription service, so you pay each month to use them. If you want a professional standard editing software you will usually have to pay for it. The top 3 best editing software of 2016, rated by ‘Top10Reviews’ were; premier pro which is around £20 a month and is made buy adobe, final cut pro which is made by apple and is around £240 and Avid media composer which is £30 a month. Some of the more popular free/cheaper editing software includes windows movie maker (free) and iMovie (£3.99)

People were making films way before any editing software and computers were made. All editing was done by hand with no software. This is called Analogue editing, and takes a lot longer than digital editing on software. You have to physically cut and put together bits of physical film to create the film you want, it is a very time consuming way of editing, and all films were made like this until the first editing software was created. To edit the physical film from the camera people would use a cutting/splicing device.

The computers at college have the editing program Avid on them. We have just started to use this editing program and I found it slightly confusing at the start but once you get used to it, its easier to understand. Avid has lots of things you can do it on and provides a wide range of things you can do to your edit to make it different.

Week 5: Unit 2: Production Research

Introduction

Planning takes place in every tv program/film. The production could not take place with out planning. Every small detail needs to be planned, even down to all the costumes every extra will wear and food for the actors. Usually the planning takes longer than the actual filming, it could take months even up to a year to plan a movies because there is so many thing to plan.

The scene i’m doing is the opening scene to the movie Suicide Squad. In this opening scene you meet two of the main characters, Dead Shot played by will smith and Harley Quin played by Margot Robbie. Both the characters are in a place called ‘the black site’ as we get told in the opening, which is some sort of military base. They both get talked to by the same guard, and Harley has flash backs.

Research

Location – ‘Black site’

For the shot of the ‘black site’ I would employ a CGI artist to draw the location, because the shot is quite far out and the buildings in the distance are not very detailed, and the CGI artist would be able to change the colours of the sea and sky easily to like we see in the beginning of the shot.

I chose this CGI artist because a lot of his work was location designing and I think his style would be best for this shot.

Set design – Painting on the wall

For the painting on the wall of ‘death’ I would employ a graffiti artist, because the wall is meant to be outside, I feel like a graffiti artist would be best suited.

Graffiti

Most of the artists work are done on walls so they would be able to create the painting perfectly.

 Set design – office

For this office I would need a set designer and a studio to put the set in and film in.

TV Studio – Canterbury, Kent

Set design – prison cell

We see will smith playing Dead Shot in a small prison cell, with nothing but a punching bag. For this set I would use this abandoned prison.

This cell is small like the one we see on screen and has a pig metal door.

I would use this punching bag as it looks worn out and kind of old and the chains at the top make it look like it could be in a prison.

Week 4: Unit 2: Research Camera

Introduction:

I am going to research different types of cameras, and how there’re  used.

What I am going to research:

Primary:

  • Look at different camera in shops

Secondary:

  • Different types of camera
  • When and what are they are used

Report

There are lots of different types of cameras used in film making. Some are big some are small and some are very expensive and some are reasonably cheap. The camera you use really depends on the shot you would like to get and what you are filming.

If you just want a simple video you could go for a consumer camcorder. It can help you develop your framing skills, and they do not cos a lot if you get a simple one. Camcorders are good for students and for family’s. There pretty small and there simple to operate, but the quality of the image will not be as good as other more expensive camera, especially in low light. Another type of camcorder is a prosumer camcorder, which are a lot like the consumer camcorders but they are better in quality and have options for you to plug in a separate microphone, but still do not have all the features of a professional video camera. You can also get professional camcorders which are very good quality and give you a lot more options and more creative control. But these camcorders can be expensive, and also quite bulky, and it may take some time to learn how to use them.

DSLR are still cameras interchangeable lenses. They are the best option if you are on a budget but you still want a high quality shot. They are very good quality and they give you lots of creative control because there lots of different things you can do on them to make your shots look different. With these cameras sound recording can be awkward and they can be awkward if you are using them handheld. They also have limited recording time which could be a problem if you need to take a lot of shots. But in general they are better than camcorders because they give you more benefits not available when filming with a camcorder.

Interchangeable lens videos are best for serious film makers. They have the advantages of camcorders and DSLR cameras. The larger image sensors and interchangeable lenses make better video quality, and most have pro sound feature so the audio will be better when using these types of cameras. The only real cons to these cameras is that the are usually quite big and because they are such good cameras obviously they are going to be pretty expensive, but but serious film makers with a good budget will be able to afford them.

I looked at many different cameras in shops. You can pretty much buy any camera you need, a simple cheap one, or an expensive professional one. It really just depends on what type you want and what you are using the camera for.

Week 3: Unit 2: Research: Sound – Foley

 Introduction:

I am going to find out about the use of Foley sound in films and TV shows.

What I am going to research:

Primary

  • Try and recreate some Foley sounds

Secondary

  • What is Foley sound
  • How they make Foley sound
  • Importance of Foley in film

Foley sound effects are sounds added to a film in post production, so after the filming has stopped. Such as doors opening and shutting or slamming, fighting sounds, glass breaking and foot steps. So sounds the microphone did not pick up, or they were not loud enough. The main job of the person recording round on set is to record the dialogue, not the other sounds on the set.

Foley sound is created by Foley artists, on a Foley stage, in a Foley studio. A Foley stage is an area with lots of props to make sounds from, and a Foley studio is a specialized studio with special microphones that will pick up the sound well. The Foley artists stand on the Foley stage with the film on the screen in front of them, then they perform the sounds in time with film.

Without Foley in film, the film would not seem right, it would seem empty and hollow. When watching a film you need to be able to hear all the sounds not just the dialogue. Foley sounds are also used in documentary, it helps to bring the footage to life. It enhances the scene, mostly in comedy and action films, to make them more funny or intense.

I tried to recreate some Foley sound effects, it was harder than I thought. You cant just use any surface to try and make foot step sounds because different surfaces sound different, it depends on what type of foot step sounds you want. Creating water sounds was quite easy, I experimented with different kitchen utensils with running water, and using dry materials, like rocks.

Week 1 Unit 2: Research

Primary research is personal research that you do. You go out and find things and talk to people about the thing you want to research. This could be going out and taking pictures, interviewing people, taking surveys and practicing things to see if they will work in the future. You usually use primary research to find out things you didn’t know and to use to do tasks you do not know much about.

Secondary research is when you use research that someone has already made. Like taking photos of the internet, watching, listening or reading interviews conducted by someone else or looking at surveys results that people have already done.

There are lots of different types of research you can use. You could do a survey or a questionnaire witch can be primary or secondary. You can use pictures you have taken or photos from the internet or that people have given to you. You could get research and get information from a book, or find an interview with someone and make notes from that. Reading an article online would also be a good way of researching things.

The main source for researching things would probably be the internet, or going and talking to people. Other sources would include books, journals and diary’s. Also reports and articles people have written witch could be online or in magazines or newspapers.

A research plan is what you do before you go and do the actual research and then go on to actually making whatever you are doing the research for. You can plan out what sources and methods you are going to use.

If I was going to do research before making a documentary on crime in Thanet this is how I would do my research plan.

  • What? What am I trying to find out?

What style documentary are you going to? How long? Who is the target audience. Find out statistics for crime in Thanet, is it higher in some places. Where in Thanet has the highest crime rate, see if u can film there, would it be safe to film there? Look at the competition, if there already is a documentary about crime in Thanet. Research well known and some not well known crime story’s in Thanet. Research Thanet police, are they a good?

  • How? Where will I get the information for my research?

Use the internet, look up articles and reports. Watch old news reports. Use Facebook and twitter, ask people if they have been a victim of crime in Thanet and if they would like to share their experience. Talk to Thanet police.

  • Source locate

Read all the information you have found, analyse it. Summarise it so it is shorter.

  • Apply it

Make a plan of what information you want to use or make a report of it
